WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM OUR SPORTS HEROS?
For many people, sports means entertainment but there are so many transferable skills in sports that we can use in our business and careers.
Elite athletes have to train, not only their bodies to perform, but also their minds. Some of the greatest stories from the Olympics are the ones where people have overcome obstacles to get to the podium with resilience and mental toughness. And, in life and in business, we have a lot to learn from them…..
- CLEAR GOALS AND GOOD HABITS. Achieving a goal starts with setting one, and good habits help you to stick to the plan. Olympians set realistic goals and train hard to achieve them, and they celebrate the small victories along the way.
- MOTIVATION. Motivation is your brain’s way of keeping you going when times get tough. Marathon runners use intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to get them across the finish line, and so can you at work.
- POSITIVE GROWTH MINDSET. If you have a growth mindset you believe that with effort, perseverance and drive, you can develop your natural qualities. With a lot of practice, Olympians challenge their fixed mindset to grow and succeed.
- CONFIDENCE. Self-confidence means trusting your own judgement and abilities. These are all traits that allow athletes to take risks and go the extra mile to go for gold in their event.
- RESILIENCE. Resilience is our ability to adapt and bounce back when things don’t go as planned. In the Olympic Women’s Triathlon event this year, Georgia Taylor-Brown overcame a puncture to win silver medal. If that isn’t resilience I don’t know what is!
- COURAGE. Olympians push themselves to their absolute limits, but, as was shown by gymnast Simone Biles this year, they also have the courage to say when enough is enough. By prioritising her mental health by stepping away from the competition, Biles taught the world that it’s OK not to be OK.
